With the image of the stricken Costa Concordia sitting half-engulfed off the Italian coast still fresh in many minds the thought of a cruise vacation may seem a little unnerving. But cruise ships have stringent safeguards and regulations in place designed to keep passengers safe. The International Maritime Organization, a UN body that overseas the design and operation of cruise ships, regulates the cruise industry. The IMO mandates global standards for the safety and operation of cruise ships through the adoption of treaties, regulations and resolutions.

Drunk drops anchor

A drunk passenger onboard Holland America's MS Ryndam cruise ship was allegedly able to drop the ships anchor early Saturday morning according to an FBI affidavit obtained by The Smoking Gun.Surveillance video showed Rick Ehlert deploying the anchor which had the potential to do some serious damage according to the report. For good measure he also allegedly sent off a life buoy.

I like to keep my weekends busy so this past weekend I zipped down on the Amtrak to Seattle and then took a cruise ship back, not a bad way to spend a couple of days. I left Vancouver early Friday morning on the Amtrak. I decided to take first class and it was pretty comfy, nice leather seats and lots of legroom although I heard coach wasn't bad either.
