With a healthy majority of our country's population living within an hour and a half of the U.S. border we Canadians visit our southern neighbour to do a lot of things. According to the Canadian Airport Council in 2011 some 4.8 million of us went down south to catch a plane, most likely hoping to avoid some of the taxes and fees charged on air travel in the Great White North.

A majority of Canadians would prefer a response in kind if a proposed U.S. border tax goes ahead. Passengers travelling to the U.S. by air or sea from Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean would be subject to a $5.50 US "passenger inspection" fee under the proposal.

According to a recent survey of 3,400 travellers done by FutureBrand, Canada is the No. 1 place they want to visit. After finishing in 12th place five years ago Canada has been on a steady climb. The success is definitely linked to the Winter Olympics last February. Other reasons for this triumph are because of more and better-targeted marketing by the Canadian Tourism Commission (CTC).
