The union representing Air Canada’s baggage handlers, mechanics and cargo agents has issued strike notice to the airline. Union members voted 78 per cent in favour of the strike mandate after turning down the airlines latest offer. The union will be in strike position March 12 “The lines of communication remain open and we are hopeful that there remains sufficient time to avoid a work disruption,” Air Canada Chief Operating Officer Duncan Dee said in a statement. this past weekend but the massive airliner will soon be a familiar site in the country. Air Canada has ordered 37 B787 Dreamliners which will enter the airlines’ fleet in 2014. The Dreamliner’s first Canadian stop was Toronto but when it enters service with Air Canada it won’t just be serving Canada’s biggest city. Ben Smith, the airline’s chief financial officer says the 787s will begin flying out of Toronto, Vancouver and Montreal gradually expanding to serve Calgary, Edmonton, Ottawa and Halifax. WestJet is expanding. The Calgary based airline is going ahead with plans to start a regional airline that will serve smaller Canadian cities. Currently WestJet’s fleet is made up exclusively of Boeing 737 Next Generation aircraft which are too big to serve smaller cities.

Vancouver International Airport plans to spend $1.8 billion over the next decade to spruce itself up so it can remain competitive in the marketplace. What does this mean for the travelling public? It means that the airport improvement fee will jump from $15 to $20 come May 1 for those travelling outside of B.C. For those travelling within B.C. or the Yukon it will remain $5.
