A majority of Canadians would prefer a response in kind if a proposed U.S. border tax goes ahead.

Passengers travelling to the U.S. by air or sea from Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean would be subject to a $5.50 U.S. “passenger inspection” fee under the proposal.

An online survey conducted by Vision Critical/Angus Reid earlier this month found 64 per cent of Canadian respondents would like to see a similar charge put in place on American travellers if the tax is implemented.

American respondents were spilt in their support of taxing their northern neighbour with 41 per cent in favour and 39 per cent opposed.

Fifty eight per cent of Canadian respondents said if the fee was imposed they wouldn’t alter their U.S. travel plans.

The proposed fee was included in the budget that U.S. President Barack Obama submitted to congress Monday.
